Undergraduate mathematics teaching, pedagogical preparation, and scholarship of teaching and learning.

I enjoy helping students develop both mathematical technique and the confidence to explain why a method works. My teaching emphasizes careful interpretation of notation, connections among representations, regular low-stakes practice, and opportunities for students to revisit ideas as their understanding develops.

Teaching development and recognition

I received UMBC’s Outstanding Graduate Teaching Assistant in the Field of Mathematics recognition in 2026. My formal preparation also includes a one-year Pedagogical Formation program at Istanbul University (2018–2019), which included supervised teaching of ninth- and tenth-grade mathematics, and Graduate Teaching Assistant Institute training at Western Kentucky University.

I completed teaching certifications at the Scholar and Practitioner levels through the Center for the Integration of Research, Teaching, and Learning at UMBC. CIRTL supports the development of evidence-based, inclusive, and reflective teaching practices for future faculty. Additional information is available through the CIRTL Network.

I also completed a CIRTL Teaching-as-Research project, Developing Students’ Symbol Sense with Targeted Practice, which examines how targeted examples can help students interpret mathematical notation and reason through ambiguity.

Scholarship of Teaching and Learning

My current SoTL project, Developing Students’ Symbol Sense with Targeted Practice, investigates how brief, low-stakes exercises can help students move beyond procedural symbol manipulation and interpret mathematical expressions structurally. The project uses targeted practice, written explanation, and paired confidence-and-accuracy measures to study changes in students’ notational awareness.

Orientation Advising

Since Summer 2024, I have served as an Orientation Advisor at UMBC. Through this work, I have individually advised more than 300 incoming students from a wide range of majors, academic backgrounds, and educational experiences. During each appointment, I help students review their prior coursework, discuss their intended major and academic interests, identify appropriate courses, and develop a schedule that supports progress toward graduation. Orientation advising complements my classroom teaching by giving me a broader view of individual needs and ambitions of students.
