MATH 221 — Introduction to Linear Algebra
Matrix methods, vector spaces, eigenvalues, orthogonality, and mathematical abstraction.
Instructor: Ahmet Kaan Aydin
Term: Winter
Location: University of Maryland, Baltimore County
Course overview
This intensive course developed both computational proficiency and conceptual understanding in linear algebra. Students worked with matrix algorithms while also learning the language of vector spaces and the role of abstraction in scientific applications.
Topics
- Systems of linear equations and row reduction
- Matrices and matrix transformations
- Linear independence, span, and bases
- Null spaces, column spaces, rank, and invertibility
- Determinants
- Eigenvalues, eigenvectors, and diagonalization
- Orthogonality, projections, and orthogonal bases
Student evaluation summary
Responses: 24 of 28 students (85.7%)
The table reports question-block means from the UMBC student course evaluation. Scores use a five-point scale, where higher values indicate more positive responses. The UMBC column provides the university-wide comparison reported for the same evaluation blocks.
| Evaluation area | Instructor mean | UMBC mean |
|---|---|---|
| Individual rapport | 4.7 | 4.4 |
| Instructor evaluation | 4.6 | 4.4 |
| Overall instructor rating | 4.5 | 4.4 |
