MATH 152 — Calculus and Analytic Geometry II
Integration, sequences and series, Taylor expansions, and parametric and polar calculus.
Instructor: Ahmet Kaan Aydin
Term: Spring
Location: University of Maryland, Baltimore County
Course overview
This course combined advanced integration techniques with the study of sequences, infinite series, and multiple representations of curves. Reading quizzes and regular low-stakes assignments encouraged students to prepare before class and revisit difficult concepts throughout the semester.
This offering also provided the instructional setting for my Scholarship of Teaching and Learning work on students’ interpretation of mathematical notation.
Topics
- Techniques and applications of integration
- Improper integrals
- Sequences and infinite series
- Convergence tests
- Power, Taylor, and Maclaurin series
- Parametric curves
- Polar coordinates and polar calculus
Student evaluation summary
Responses: 43 of 74 students (58.1%)
The table reports question-block means from the UMBC student course evaluation. Scores use a five-point scale, where higher values indicate more positive responses. The UMBC column provides the university-wide comparison reported for the same evaluation blocks.
| Evaluation area | Instructor mean | UMBC mean |
|---|---|---|
| Individual rapport | 4.5 | 4.4 |
| Instructor evaluation | 4.4 | 4.3 |
| Overall instructor rating | 4.4 | 4.3 |
